Write to your Favorite Author...

Young readers in grades 4-12 are invited to write a personal letter to an author for the Letters about Literature (LAL) contest, a national reading and writing promotion program. The letter can be to any author (living or dead) from any genre (fiction or nonfiction, contemporary or classic) explaining how that author's work changed the student's life or view of the world.

Prizes will be awarded on both the state and national levels. The South Carolina Center for the Book's panel of judges will select the top letter writers in the state, to be honored in an awards ceremony at a later date. Their winning letters will be published online at the South Carolina Center for the Book's website. South Carolina winners will also receive monetary prizes, and then advance to the national judging. South Carolina winners will receive $100 for first place, $50 for second place, and $25 for third place in each level. Submissions from Grades 9-12 must be postmarked by December 2, 2016. Submissions from Grades 4-8 must be postmarked by January 9, 2017.

The annual writing contest for young readers is made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, with additional support from gifts to the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, in partnership with the South Carolina Center for the Book and the South Carolina State Library with financial support from the South Carolina State Library Foundation. For more information and entry forms, please visit readsc.org/projects.

Annual Dodgeball Tournament...

The annual Blythewood Middle School Dodgeball Tournament will be held next week during the designated grade-level enrichment periods.

As always, the goal of our dodgeball tournament is to assist Blythewood High School with their Holiday wishes campaign.  This year, Blythewood High is doing this a bit different, so what we are asking of students will be a bit different as well.  Seeding on the 2nd day of the tournament will determined by the wins and losses of day 1 and the collection of your designated items to give to Blythewood High School.

The project is called PROJECT CONNECT and Blythewood High is actually making boxes to be given to families in need.  Blythewood High School will be competing by the number of boxes made at the high school. To assist them in these efforts, we will assist by dividing up the items needed for boxes among our grade-levels and then having homerooms bring in those items.  Blythewood Middle School will then make our own boxes after Thanksgiving break to take to Blythewood High School.

Attached is a list of possible items by grade-level.  Students are asked to begin bringing these items in.

As always, thank you for your generosity and support in making this an amazing event for our students and for those less fortunate!

Impact Aid Forms...

Richland School District Two schools are funded primarily by local taxes. Due to the large federal presence in our area and the tax exemptions available to federally connected personnel, businesses and agencies; our district is eligible to apply for federal Impact Aid Funds. Impact Aid is a federal program designed to assist local school districts that enroll federally connected students.  The Impact Aid Program funds become  part of Richland School District Two's general operating budget and are critical to  maintaining high standards for educational excellence. Your assistance is needed in identifying students that may be federally connected.  Impact Aid Program Survey Forms were distributed to all students  on November 12. Please take a few minutes and complete the form for each Richland Two student in your household and return it back Monday. The information you provide on these forms is confidential.

Thank you for supporting our schools.
