Rematch for a good cause...

Thursday Faculty vs. Student Basketball Rematch for a good cause!!!

As we work to raise funds for our staff members that have been faced with tragic circumstances over the last week, our faculty members, in addition to the faculty vs student basketball game, have gone even further to make this event fun for students, while raising money for these worthy causes.

Teachers have volunteered to be "pied!"  Each grade-level team, as well as Enrichment team has had teachers volunteer to be "pied".  The teacher on each team that has the most money donated by students in their jar/bucket, will be the teacher that will be "pied" at the faculty vs. student basketball game.  Each team will have one teacher that will be "pied".  Students may begin bringing their money in tomorrow.  Donations will be collected through Thursday during each grade-level lunch period.

Counselor's Corner: Truthfulness....

Our spotlight core principle for the week is Truthfulness.  Be Proactive by demonstrating the core principle of Truthfulness.  Truthfulness - telling or disposed to tell the truth; truth - sincerity in action, character, and utterance, Fact, the body of real things, events and facts.

Quotes:
Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters. Albert Einstein

If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.  Mark Twain

Above all, don't lie to yourself.  The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a a point that the cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others.  And having no respect he ceases to love."  Fyodor Dostoyevsky

It takes strength and courage to admit the truth.  Rick Riordan

Blythewood Middle Re-Designated as a 2017 Schools to Watch...

BLYTHEWOOD MIDDLE RE-DESIGNATED AS A 2017 SCHOOLS TO WATCH
Through the Schools to Watch program, the National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform recognizes middle schools continuously moving forward in the areas of academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity and organizational structure. Schools must submit applications which are then reviewed by a team of trained middle level educators across the state. The reading team makes the determination if a school moves forward with the next step of hosting a visit. The visiting team determines whether the school has met the criteria to be named a School to Watch. The South Carolina Schools to Watch program is proud to announce 11 schools designated as Schools to Watch for 2017. School to Watch designations are held for three years, and then schools must reapply to become re-designated.

Blythewood Middle School in Richland School District Two was one of two schools first designated in 2008 and earned re-designation for the third time this year. Blythewood Middle will receive an award at the general session at the South Carolina Association for Middle Level Education conference on March 4, 2017. In addition, Blythewood Middle will send a team to Washington, D.C. in June where they will meet with their area legislative representatives and receive their national award at the National Forum’s Schools to Watch conference.

The National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform is an alliance of 65 educators, researchers, national associations and officers of professional organizations and foundations dedicated to improving education in the middle grades. Its website – www.schoolstowatch.org – features detailed information about the selection criteria used in the recognition program. South Carolina’s STW program is sponsored by the South Carolina Association for Middle Level Education, South Carolina Department of Education, South Carolina Association of School Administrators-Middle Level Principals, and the Middle Grades Initiative.

Sow a thought, and you reap an act;
Sow an act, and you reap a habit;
Sow a habit, and you reap a character;
Sow a character, and you reap a destiny.

By Samuel Smiles

Character development is essential in helping students to reach their full potential.  Our students are learning the importance of character through teacher led discussions of the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey.   These 7 habits that are common to successful and happy teens are:
Habit 1:  Be Proactive
Take responsibility for your life.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Define your mission and goals in life.

Habit 3: Put First Things First
Prioritize, and do the most important things first.

Habit 4: Think Win-Win
Have an everyone-can-win attitude.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Listen to people sincerely.

Habit 6: Synergize
Work together to achieve more.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
Renew yourself regularly.
