Dismissal Policy...

What are the procedures for early dismissal/sign out?
If a parent wishes to check out his/her child from school during the day because of a doctor/dentist appointment or other valid reason, the parent is requested to report to the receptionist area in order to properly sign the child out of school.  Calling to have your student waiting is not permitted as Parents/legal guardians must present a valid state or federal issued ID and the individual must also be listed as the parent/legal guardian in our PowerSchool system.

What are the procedures for someone other than a parent/legal guardian to sign a student out for early dismissal?
Parents/legal guardians that desire to have another individual sign their student out in a non-emergency situation must ensure that a written release is provided to the school each time the individual will be picking up the student.  The written release may be emailed to bm_dismissal@richland2.org. Please note that this mailbox is not monitored and a verbal confirmation is still required, so please make sure that you call the school and notify them of the change.  Parents/Guardians who wish to add someone to their child’s pick up list may do so by stopping by the school with a valid state or federal issued ID and a note to maintain on file giving permission for an individual to pick up their child for the 2017-2018 school year.  This note is void after the 2017-2018 school year.
At all times ALL persons signing students out for early dismissal must have a proper state or federal issued ID upon arrival.

What is the early dismissal cut off time?
Please note that 1:59pm is the latest that a student may be signed out for early dismissal.

The Melba McKenzie and LeAnn Crosby Summer Scholarships...

The Melba McKenzie and LeAnn Crosby Summer Scholarships were established by the South Carolina Consortium for Gifted Education (SCCGE) as a tribute to the spirit and perseverance of former educators who devoted their career to  working with gifted and talented academic and artistic students in our state.

The scholarship is provided for one or more low SES gifted students at the middle school level (current grades 6-8).  The amount of the scholarship, not to exceed $750.00, is designed to cover or partially cover tuition to attend a summer program for academically or artistically gifted students.

Applications, disseminated through the eight regions of the Consortium, are available through teachers of gifted and school counselors.  Each region will screen its applicants and electronically submit the top two applications by March 16, 2018.

To be considered, the student must complete the attached application, an interest survey, and submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or principal explaining why the student deserves the scholarship. Both the student and parent are required to sign the application confirming their intent to use the money for the indicated camp.  Scholarship funds are sent from the SCCGE to the camp financial office.  The application will not be considered unless a specific program and date is listed.  Responsibility for selection of a summer program will rest with the parent, student and district.

Students must submit their applications to their school counselors by March 2, 2018.  Then each district submits no more than 2 applications to be considered for the regional scholarships by March 9, 2018.

Did you jump start your morning with a healthy breakfast...

Studies show kids who eat breakfast in the morning concentrate better in the classroom and perform better on math, reading and standardized tests. They have fewer behavior problems, are less likely to be tardy, and to maintain a healthy weight.

I know breakfast can seem like a hurdle in the morning. Here are a couple of tips about how to squeeze breakfast into morning routines from www.eatright.org:

  • Keep breakfast simple. Get the family going with something as quick as a bowl of whole-grain cereal with a banana or a mini meal of yogurt topped with granola, a sandwich on whole-grain bread or a slice of leftover veggie pizza.

  • Remember protein and carbohydrates.
A high-octane carbohydrate source energizes the body and brain for a busy day with fiber and nutrients. Think whole-grain cereal (hot or cold), bread, tortillas, muffins, waffles or even leftover rice or pasta. Protein often is the missing link in most morning meals and it’s needed to go strong until lunch. Think a slice of Canadian bacon, an egg, a slice of lean deli meat or low-fat cheese, a container of low-fat yogurt, a scoop of low-fat cottage cheese, a cup of milk or a handful of nuts.

  • Start the day with an extra helping of fruits and vegetables.
Breakfast is a perfect time to enjoy fruits and vegetables children need for optimal health. Try fresh seasonal fruit alone or in cereal, add frozen fruits to yogurt or toss chopped vegetables into an omelet.
  • Pack your breakfast to go.
If there's no time to eat at home, plan a nutritious option to eat in the car or bus. Busy teens can grab a banana, a bag of trail mix and a carton of milk. Don’t forget to see if your school offers a breakfast program.

  • Help make sure your kids have an appetite.
Many kids aren't hungry for breakfast because they snack too much at night. Try only offering lighter snacks in the evening and you might be surprised how much hungrier they are in the morning. In addition, try having your children dress first and eat second. Kids are more likely to feel hungry once they have a chance to wake up.

  • Be a good role model.
Children will mimic their parents' behavior, so make it a habit to sit down and eat a nutritious breakfast with your kids every morning
