BLYTHEWOOD
MIDDLE GETS BACK-TO-BACK WINS IN QUIZ WHIZ TOURNAMENT
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The winner of the 11th annual Quiz Whiz Middle
School Academic Tournament is Blythewood Middle School. This is Blythewood’s
second straight win. Quiz Whiz is a Richland School District Two sponsored
event that features sixth through eighth graders from all seven of the
district’s middle schools.
Quiz Whiz is similar to the National Academic Quiz Tournament with rigorous, pyramid-style questions focusing on history, literature, science, math, fine arts, current events, and sports. It’s not a game of trivia. Quiz Whiz was held March 25-26, 2022 at Ridge View High School located at 4801 Hard Scrabble Road, Columbia, SC.
Blythewood Middle School, coached by Janie Hamrick and Stephanie Turiak, won the competition by winning five matches and the championship round against Kelly Mill Middle School. Coached by Griff Probus, Kelly Mill won six games, losing only in the championship round by 10 points.
Previous tournament winners are Dent
Middle School (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018), Summit Parkway Middle School (2013,
2015), E.L. Wright Middle School (2012, 2019), Kelly Mill Middle School (2011)
and Blythewood (2020). The tournament was not held in 2021 because of COVID-19
restrictions.
