Fall 2022 Pilot | Middle School Athletics Expansion
Historically, middle school students have had the opportunity to participate in athletic sports offered at their respective middle schools and sports offered at the high school level that were NOT available at the middle school level (e.g., competitive cheer, lacrosse, baseball, softball, etc.).
In an effort to increase athletic opportunities available to middle school students, Richland Two will pilot an expansion of middle school athletics for Fall 2022 and permit middle school students to try out for (and subsequently participate in) two additional sports at the high school level - football (JV and B team) and volleyball.
The expanded sports (football and volleyball) procedures will mirror the procedures we currently use for middle schoolers who play at the high school level.
Please note the following:
(1) Middle school students can try out at their zoned high school for the first two days of high school tryouts. After that, middle school programs will begin their tryouts a minimum of two days later than the high school tryouts, so those students who do not make the high school team can still have the opportunity to try out for their middle school team. The official start day for high school football and volleyball tryouts is July 29.
(2) If a middle school student progresses through the first two days of high school tryouts and later drops/gets dropped from the team, he/she will not be able to participate in that sport at the middle school level if the middle school’s roster has been published already.
(3) Coaches will use the utmost discretion when selecting middle school students and only choose students whose athletic talent is well above average for a middle schooler and demonstrate exceptional ability to contribute to the high school team in a meaningful way.
Please complete the Middle School Waiver Request Form if your rising 7th or 8th grader is interested in trying out for high school football (JV and B team) or volleyball.
