8th Grade Promotion Information

The 2016 promotion ceremony will be held in the Blythewood Middle School gym.  The ceremony will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. on June 3, 2016.  All participating/eligible eighth graders are to report to their homeroom and will then line up in the cafeteria at 8:00 a.m.  The doors will be opened to the guests for seating as early as 7:30 a.m.
Seating will be limited this year, as the seating capacity of the gymnasium is 1900.  This includes students, teachers, and guests.
Students participating in promotion exercises are expected to wear attire for the occasion that is in regulation with the school’s dress code.   Students who are not appropriately attired will not be allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony.  Girls may wear a dress, slacks or skirt and top.  No shirts or dresses revealing the back should be worn without a sweater or shrug.  This includes:  tank tops, spaghetti straps, halter tops or sun/backless dresses.  Please do not allow your daughter to wear formal attire for this occasion.  Boys may wear slacks with a shirt and tie, slacks and a shirt with a collar, or a suit.  Please do not allow your son to wear a hat, sagging pants or formal attire.  Please note that all fees must be paid prior to participating in the promotion ceremony.  The last fee payment will be June 2, 2016.
Students will recess to the gym parking area following the promotion ceremony.  At that time, your son or daughter may leave with you.  We know that you want to spend time congratulating your graduate, but keep in mind that at 10:45 a.m., the remainder of the school population will be dismissed which may make it difficult for you to leave campus.  In case of
rain, we will recess to the cafeteria.  Final report cards for 8th grade students will be distributed Thursday, June 2nd.

Chromebook Collection tomorrow...

Good evening Blythewood Families,
Tomorrow, students will be turning in their Chromebooks and chargers to be stored over the summer for next school year.  On Monday, May 9th, students went through a pre-check.  Devices were initially assessed and if any work orders were needed, Mr. Abernathy began creating the work orders so the Chromebooks will be fixed over the summer.  If your child had not used their insurance yet for a repair this was applied at the pre-check and you have no additional charges.  If your child has already had a repair this year and used their insurance, then a secondary charge was placed on their account and this charge is viewable in Parent Portal.  If you have questions about fees please contact Mrs. Hardy, bookkeeper, at ext. 85404 or e-mail khardy@richland2.org.

Take-up Day
Tomorrow, students need to have their Chromebook and charger.  If they do not have these items, a charge will be placed on their account until they are submitted.  Please note that the charger is $25.00 and is NOT covered by insurance if the child has misplaced his/hers.

CASES
Students please keep your cases over the summer and have them with you when you return in August.  Whether you are coming back to BMS or going to another school in RSD2, you will need your case to be able to receive a Chromebook in August.  Have a wonderful summer and enjoy this Chromebook Case Tip for ideas of how to keep it fresh and clean for next year.

An Important Message regarding your child's schedule next year...

For the 2016-2017 school year and beyond, all students will be required to take PE/Health each year at the middle school level. In addition to this state mandated requirement, if a student does not register to take a fine arts course, the student will be required to take a course in fine arts appreciation.  Furthermore, an occupational exploratory course and an introduction to foreign language is also being incorporated into each student's schedule.  Based upon these requirements, our Master Schedule is being modified to account for these necessary changes.  Your child will still have the opportunity to select enrichment courses based upon his/her interests.

Please note that due to historically low enrollment in French classes, French will no longer be offered at Blythewood Middle School; however, 7th grade students that are currently enrolled during the 2015-16 school year will have the opportunity to register for 8th grade high school credit in French.  Spanish as a foreign language will continue to be offered for 7th and 8th grade students.  We are happy to announce the addition of a new enrichment class in Career and Technology Education (CATE).

Please bear with us as we finalize your child's enrichment selections with the new changes.  Schedules will be available in August at Charger Kick Off.  School counselors will be available during this time to answer questions.

Parent Portal Annual Update...

If you have not already done so, please login to Parent Portal to complete the annual student information update. It is important to complete this process before school gets out for the summer to prevent delays in your student’s registration for the 2016–2017 school year.
This process includes providing proof of residence, verifying student information and reviewing and completing parent or guardian agreements. If your student’s information has not changed from the previous school year, you still need to log into the system, confirm your information and review agreements that must be completed each year as required by policy or law.

If you have any questions about the annual student information update process visit the Enrollment and Registration page on our website or contact the registrar at your child’s school.

Thank you and have a great week.
