Our BMS AVID application is now open! Students who would like to be considered to be selected for the AVID Elective Class for the 2023-2024 school year may complete the attached application by Tuesday, April 18th. 
The AVID application process consists of three parts: the application, an interview, and teacher recommendations. Students who apply will receive an email with an Interview date (rising 6th graders will be conducted via Google Meet) no later than May 5th with interview details.

Columbia VA Summer Student Program Letter and Applications...

The Columbia VA Health Care System (VAHCS) will host its annual Summer Student Program for middle and high school students, ages 13-17, June 6, 2023-July 27, 2023.  This year’s program will consist of a hybrid model: specialized research projects and STEM enrichment activities.  This includes assignments in different departments, lunch & learn opportunities, and special activities, to include seminars, student leadership and journal clubs, networking, presentation skills, and mentoring.  High school students may be selected for a hybrid research opportunity; the selection process will include educational qualifications, interests, and references. High school students who are interested in applying for the research component of the summer program must complete and submit both applications, accompanied by a letter of reference from a teacher and a guidance counselor.

 

The applications and information letter are attached.  The deadline for applications is April 7th and as there are limited slots, please note applications must be returned hand signed by the student, as soon as possible.  All applications must be returned digitally to vhacmsvoluntaryservices@va.gov and will be time-stamped for accuracy, as it is a first come-first served process.

 

Program days are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8:00am-4:00 pm, with a $8.00 lunch ticket for the canteen each day.  There are many exciting lunch & learn activities planned to help ensure an interesting and exciting program. Due to the summer season being considered vacation time, the Summer Student Program carries a minimum completion requirement of 120 hours to participate.

FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS INTERESTED IN APPLYING FOR RESEARCH

 

The Columbia VAHCS is offering the Summer High School Research Program, supported by the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Research and Development (ORD). The goal of the program is to build a more diverse research workforce pipeline that will ultimately advance science and medicine to improve Veterans’ health. 

 

The program is intended for those who are academically high achieving and interested in learning more about careers in research.  In addition to gaining hands on research experience, participants will get to experience other research related career elements that typically accompany the laboratory component including seminars, journal clubs, networking, presentation skills, and mentoring.  Participants will also attend Princeton’s ACT/SAT testing preparation sessions. The Research Program carries a requirement of 176 hours for successful completion.

Leadership Roundup FlorenceRegistration closes on Wednesday, March 14th

  • The South Carolina 4-H Pinckney Leadership Roundup is an opportunity for youth leaders from diverse backgrounds to gather and take their leadership skills to the next level. Students will participate in hands-on student leadership sessions, engage in critical dialogue centered on personal excellence, establish and maintain relationships with like-minded student leaders, and connect with professionals from higher education.

4-H Pinckney Leadership CampRegistration closes on Friday, March 24th

  • The 4-H Pinckney Leadership Camp is open to rising 7th (currently in 6th grade) and 8th grade (currently in 7th grade) students.
  • This is an overnight camp experience held at Camp Long in Aiken, SC from July 16-21!

 

4-H Pinckney Leadership ConferenceRegistration closes on Friday, March 31st

  • The 4-H Pinckney Leadership Conference is open to rising sophomores (currently in 9th grade) and juniors (currently in 10th grade).
  • Youth leaders will have a weeklong experience at Clemson University learning how to become a stronger leader, a positive role model, and an inspiration to other youth.
  • This weeklong conference is held June 18-24th & July 10-16th providing two opportunities for high school youth to participate.

 

Founded after the late Senator, Clementa Pinckney, the program aims to set forth the standards and principles valued by Senator Pinckney. Our goal is to empower students to serve with compassion, lead with humility, and inspire others through integrity. We hope to do just that through our programs.
