2016-2017 Sports Physicals

Time to start planning for pre-participation physicals to carry your
student-athletes through the 2016-2017 school year.

Physical's must be dated after April 1st, 2016 in order to be valid for the 2016-2017 School Sports Season.

With that said, Richland 2 is once again partnering up with
Palmetto Health Orthopedics planning for pre-participation physicals to carry your student-athlete through the 2016-2017 school year.

Palmetto Health Orthopedics will be hosting our annual mass physical day
on Saturday April 9, 2016 at 10:00 am, for middle school students, at our Lexington Office located at 104 Saluda Pointe Drive.

Physicals are $10.00.
Checks can be made out to Blythewood Middle or you may pay online through parent portal under student fees.

Any Student interested MUST register with Mr. Ratterree, and submit payment,  by Wednesday, April 6th, 2016.

All forms must be completed in their entirety prior to arrival, including medical history and signatures, or no physical will be given. It is important that the Parent Permission and Acknowledgement Of Risk form is signed and dated
Make-up physicals will not be offered by Palmetto Health Orthopedics. If this opportunity is not seized, it will be the responsibility of the student-athlete and parent/guardian to obtain a physical prior to their team(s’) first practice in order to participate.

It is important to note we will not be offering cardiology exam and clearance at this year’s Physical Day. Anyone needing additional cardiac evaluation will need to follow up with their primary care physicians for clearance.

All athletes are urged to wear comfortable sports attire (ie: shorts, t-shirts, tennis shoes, etc…) that will allow the individual to perform basic movements required during the physical examination.

BMS HONOR BAND EARNS SUPERIOR RATING AT SOUTH CAROLINA CONCERT PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT

BLYTHEWOOD MIDDLE HONOR BAND EARNS SUPERIOR RATING AT SOUTH CAROLINA CONCERT PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT

Blythewood Middle Honor Band participated in the South Carolina Concert Performance Assessment. The band prepared three pieces to be performed on stage to an audience and three judges. After their performance, they were taken to a separate location and given six minutes to prepare a piece that had never been seen by any of them. During those six minutes, they were not allowed to play or practice; they could only talk through the piece.

This is a process that is extremely demanding of both the students and the director. It takes months of preparation and practice to be able to achieve high ratings at this event. Not all schools are able to earn the highest rating, a Superior. Your performance must be practically flawless, including the performance of the piece you have never seen and prepared in six minutes.

According to Blythewood Band teacher Ms. Dunovant, “The Blythewood Middle Honor Band was flawless. They played their tails off and put forth effort, discipline, and dedication. From the moment they took their first step towards the school, until the moment they returned to the buses, not a single student lost their focus and concentration. They had a mission and their mission was a success.”

Congratulations to the Blythewood Middle Honor Band for an exceptional job! They worked very hard to earn their SUPERIOR rating. They will take the comments from the judges and continue to work hard to prepare for their next performance on April 9th at the Charleston Music Festival. Blythewood Middle celebrates and encourages these young musicians!

Tdap Immunization

The Tdap immunization, commonly called the Tetanus and Whooping Cough vaccine, is a requirement for all students entering 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th grades for next school year (2016-2017). Pertussis immunity wears off over time, so students in the targeted grade levels are required to have the vaccine to prevent the spread of Pertussis/ Whooping Cough.
Pertussis/ Whooping Cough is highly contagious and is spread via droplets from a simple cough. Pertussis is known for uncontrollable, violent coughing which often makes it hard to breathe. After fits of many coughs, someone with pertussis often needs to take deep breaths which result in a "whooping" sound. Pertussis most commonly affects infants and young children and can be fatal, especially in babies less than 1 year of age. (http://www.cdc.gov/pertussis/index.html)
The best way to protect against pertussis is immunization. By state law, students must show proof of receiving the Tetanus shot/ Tdap vaccine at the start of their 7th grade school year or they will be subject to exclusion from school. The deadline for compliance for next school year is Wednesday August 17, 2016.
Richland School District Two is partnering with DHEC to provide Tdap immunizations in the middle schools for current 6th graders so they can meet the 7th grade requirement. Consent forms are going home Monday March 14, 2016 and are due back to the school nurse by March 22, 2016. Please contact your school nurse for questions or concerns.
Here are the schools and the dates of their Tdap vaccination clinics:
