Career Corner

CAREER CORNER

By Lara Schmitz, GCDF

Middle School Career Development, it’s never too early to plan!
This fall has been devoted to career exploration beginning with BMS Career Day in September followed by career guidance classroom sessions for all 6th and 7th graders. Students were administered career interest inventories using the SCCIS web site. Students then investigated careers of interest based on their assessment results. This lays the foundation to prepare students for choosing a career cluster and major program of study for high school.  8th graders will have their sessions in the winter/spring prior to IGP conferences to help prepare them for this important event. The theme for the Guidance Department in November was Goal Setting, also a crucial component to career development and planning.

Teams ~ The Hour of Code

Blythewood Middle School kicked off participation in the global movement in a week long event, December 7th -13th , known as The Hour of Code. The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. Mr. Hoffman’s TEAMS class hosted an IT-oLogy volunteer Kirk Carlson who shared his background in Engineering and coding to over a hundred 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Students enjoyed being able to try several tutorials such as: Star Wars: Building a Galaxy with Code, Minecraft with Code, and Code with Anna and Elsa. Thanks to IT-oLogy, Kirk Carlson, and all the other volunteers for their support within the community.

Nothing But Net

Two Midlands school districts are holding a friendly rematch on the basketball court to see who can score the most points and raise the most money to fight breast cancer. The 2nd annual “Nothing but Net” charity basketball game between Richland One and Richland Two will take place on Thursday, January 7 at 6 p.m. at Keenan High School, located at 361 Pisgah Church Road.   Proceeds will benefit Palmetto Health Breast Center’s Walk for Life.  In addition to the basketball game, “Nothing but Net” fans will honor breast cancer survivors, see who boasts the best mascot and watch which school district official can make the most free throws.  Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at Richland One and Richland Two district offices and at the door. Admission is free for children under age 6. Come out for a fun night and a great cause!  The game was originally scheduled in October but had to be postponed because of the historic flood. A message from the health room...

As part of the eight components of school health, School Nurses conduct periodic vision, dental, hearing, blood pressure, and other screenings as recommended by South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, and as needed as part of the nurse's assessment during a health room visit. These screenings are important in early detection of hearing or vision difficulties that may impact teaching and learning. Many times a student is not even aware he/she is having difficulty seeing the board, reading, or hearing classroom instructions. Please contact your child's school nurse, Ms. Gladden at 691-6850 ext 85410 if you do not want your child screened.
